In Luke 2:6-7, “While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.”
Mary’s husband, Joseph, was a descendant of King David. Because of Emperor Caesar Augustus’s census policy, Joseph had to return with Mary to his hometown of Bethlehem to register. At that time, Bethlehem was a very small village, and the lack of a guest room was likely due to the census, which drew many visitors to inns around Jerusalem. As a result, innkeepers would temporarily open up their animal stalls for poor travelers to stay in.
After Jesus was born, Mary wrapped Him in cloths and laid Him in a trough used for feeding animals. When the Lord Jesus came into the world as a man to save people, the world had no place for Him. The glorious Lord came to earth in such a lowly manner, hiding His honor and nobility, and quietly becoming one of the most humble people. In this humble state, He lived before God in the way God desired for us, leaving us with no excuse before God. He also showed us that we, too, can become the kind of people God wants us to be, through Christ.
