In Deuteronomy 21:23, God commanded that a criminal’s “body must not remain hanging on the pole overnight. Be sure to bury it that same day, because anyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse. You must not defile the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.”
And Galatians 3:13 says, “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: ‘Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.'”
In the Book of Deuteronomy, part of the Law of Moses, God prescribed that the “body of a criminal must not remain hanging on a pole overnight.” The body was publicly displayed on a pole because the one who was hung was under God’s curse. God used capital punishment to put an end to sin, but death was never God’s original intention. He did not allow death to linger in the Promised Land. After the warning was served, the body had to be buried that same day so as not to defile the Lord’s land.
To redeem us from the curse of the Law, the Lord Jesus became incarnate and was nailed to the cross. He took our place, hanging on the pole, bearing the shame and curse we deserved, so that we might gain true freedom. Romans 5:19 says, “For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.” Adam had God’s image but did not choose God’s life. As a result, he was “separated from the life God gives,” fell short of God’s glory, and plunged all his descendants into despair. Christ is the exact representation of God’s being. He is life itself and has become our life. God, through His grace, wants to give people eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ, bringing all those who were in despair through Adam into the glory of life.
